Kemba Smith’s Husband: Who Is Patrick Pradia?

Kemba Smith Pradia is a justice reform advocate whose life story became the 2024 film Kemba. Her husband is Patrick Pradia; the couple met in 2006 and married afterwards, and they have a daughter together.

Her story

Born on 28 August 1971 in Glen Allen, Virginia, Smith was a student when she became involved with a man who abused her and ran a drug operation. She never sold drugs herself, but in 1994 she was sentenced to 24.5 years under mandatory minimums for a first-time nonviolent offense. She was pregnant during the case and had a son in December 1994.

Freedom and activism

Her husband

Patrick Pradia has supported her through years of public advocacy. Sources agree on his name; any page giving him a different first name is mistaken. Beyond that, the couple keep much of their life private.

Why her story still matters

Her case is often cited in conversations about mandatory minimum sentencing and how abuse and coercion are treated in drug conspiracy cases. See related profiles on Tudor Dixon's family and Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz.
