Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz: Who Was Claudia Sheinbaum’s Father?
Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz was a Mexican chemical engineer and businessman, and the father of Claudia Sheinbaum, who became Mexico's first female president. He died in 2013 at the age of 80.
Family origins
His parents were Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Lithuania who arrived in Mexico in the 1920s. That means he was a second-generation Mexican, rooted in both the Jewish diaspora and Mexican public life. His wife, Annie Pardo Cemo, comes from a family with Sephardic Jewish roots from Bulgaria.
Profession
Carlos worked as a chemical engineer and was involved in producing chemicals used for curing leather. His professional world was industrial and scientific, a background shared by much of his family.
His wife and children
Annie Pardo Cemo is a molecular biologist who was awarded Mexico's National Prize for Arts and Sciences in 2023. The couple had three children:
- Julio, a physicist and oceanography researcher
- Claudia, a climate scientist who became Mexico City's head of government and then president of Mexico
- Adriana, a teacher in the United States, married to Rodrigo García Barcha, son of writer Gabriel García Márquez
